Sixteen years ago,...what do Acheh & Penang have in common?
Both of them were hit by Tsunami in year of 2004. Penang was not badly hit compared to Acheh in which the tsunami has claimed hundreds of thousands of casualties..

Will tsunami reach Penang again?? I hope not..but in the future u 'll never know...but one thing i wanted to share that mangroves ecosystem is important to minimize the impact of the tsunami.
Last year, President Jokowi of Indonesia instructed his people to plant more mangroves near their coastal areas. In contras..some parts of Malaysia e.g Penang, the mangroves ecosystem were sacrificed for the sake of new development.
Here are some of the links regarding the destruction of Penang mangroves ecosystem: Willing to destroy mangrove forests for the sake of development? Mangrove forest in Juru illegally cleared, confirms assemblyman
Why do we need to protect mangroves????
If u understand the concept of diffraction..mangroves will act as an obstacle to the incoming waves..
When the tsunami waves are diffracted..its amplitude will decrease..in other words, its energy is reduced.
Mangroves' roots also have smaller gaps to reduce further the waves' energy. Watch this video!
Perhaps we need to educate our children and the relevant authorities to appreciate the importance of the mangroves ecosystem. Don't let these ecosystems being sacrificed for the sake of development.. Once they are fully destroyed..it will only jeopardies our future generation.
