SPM Physics: AC Generator

The different between AC & DC generator is:
-it consists of 2 slip rings instead of commutator
-slip rings allows current in outer circuit to flow in different direction

For better undertanding, watch how it moves in the video below..

The output induce current varies at different angle of the coil rotation. Observe the graph below.

  • The current is zero when the coil is vertical. This is because the coil is parallel with magnetic field results in no magnetic field being cut. Thus no current is induced.
  • The current is maximum when the coil is horizontal. At this point maximum rate of change or rate of cutting of the magnetic fields occur.
  • You also must be able to differentiate the output graph of AC & DC generator. Click image below to see the diffrence.

SPM Tips: Do SWAT Analysis

Through survey i've made in this blog ..majorities of the students said they didnt get a good results. Well..if u are now in form 5 & among of those who got bad results, i advice u to do SWAT analysis.
What is S.W.A.T analysis??
It is a postmortem technique to identify the following:

S= Strength
Know where is your strength in physics. Polish that particlar topics so that they will be your best bet while answering SPM paper. Make sure u didnt do any mistakes if these topics come out in SPM.

W=weakness
This is far more important. By now u should know where's your weakness. For example, ask this questions:

Which topic that u are not familiar with?
Which paper has degrade most of your marks..is it paper1, 2 or 3?
If paper 2,then zoom in,..which section..is it section A, B & C.
Learn from those mistakes u had made..& most important DON'T REPEAT THE SAME mistake.
One more thing, U'll be having a BIG problem if u do not know 'what u don't know' ..faham ke??
So please identify what is the topics that u know nothing about them b4 its TOO late.

A=Action
Once u've analysed both strength & weakness, its time to do some action about it. Go & plan how to improve your weaknesess. Here i list out some suggestion:

-Add more hours in your study scheddule & focus on improving yr weakness.
-Do lots of questions on your weakest topics. Find some pass yr questions as well. -Do study group to improve your understanding. It is more effective as u'll learn better while discussing it with others. -If your parent has more budget, U can hire a personal tutor to improve your understanding. U can clarify most of the doubts abt physics with the tutor.

T=Threat
Identify what are other things that keep u away frm doing revison. For example, ask this followingquestions:
-Is internet keeping u away frm study?
IF YES..
u need to be disiplined . Instead of surfing on non important things, u shud stick to my blog & study physics :)

-Does playing video games, watching TV make u end up doing NO revision?
What else i'm gonna say..just stop it..SPM is once in a lifetime. After that mainlah puas2.

-Does your relationship with someone affect yr study?
If tis is the case, just forget him/her...,.. appreciate your youth time.
Dont over explore.. Love yourself. Trust me, in the end u wont end up married with him/her.
Most of the time u'll only get HURT
..Anyway benda2 couple ni buat tambah dosa jer and might lead u getting a bad SPM result ..
Trust me..i'm an xperienced teacher & have seen lots of them end up got BAD results.

-Family problems?
Well i had an experienced where a student flunk on his SPM due to this problem. If u are among them, go & seek counsillor for advise or share it with someone u can trust. Be THOUGH & pray a lot!
The bottom line is..Please identify other THREATS that distract u frm doing SPM revision.

So that is what SWAT analysis is all about.
S=Strength
W=Weakness
A=Action
T=Threat

After u've analysed & studied all these aspect , u need to manage all those information and start to do some ACTION!
Start it NOW!

Best wishes & regards,

SPM Physics: DC Generator

As i promised earlier..i'll discuss on application of faraday's law..
From this law we can generate different magnitude of induced current..
I use the word generate..which from this word scientists have managed to come out with a brilliant device called a GENERATOR.

In SPM, we will learn 2 types of generator..
1. DC generator
2. AC generator.

For both cases u must know how to describe their working principle. U need also to compare the difference between the two. It came out in one of SPM paper through section B, which asked the student to convert an AC to DC generator. Moreover, u must be able to differentiate the difference between DC motor & DC generator.
As i've told u so many times..u must read all the application for each subtopic. Then find questions about them.. please don't take it for granted..

Before i move further, for those doesnt know what is DC & AC means..
DC=direct current, i.e the current flows in 1 direction
AC=Alternating current, current can flow frm different direction

Now..Lets anaylse their working principle
1. DC generator
DC generator consist of 4 basic parts:
magnet, coil, carbon brush & commutator.

Basic working principle:
  • When the coil is rotated, side ab move upward, side cd moves downward.
  • both sides cut the magnetic field
  • induce current is produced, which then flows in the coil to external circuit
  • commutator ensure the current flows in one direction
to understand this process better, watch this video...

i will discuss the comparison between AC & DC generator soon..meanwhile u can download the electromagnetic notes & look at the detail as well.

2. AC generator( to be continued)

SPM Physics: Faraday's Law

Sorry for not updating a new post for quite sometime. I have lots of work need to be looked after. The truth is i'm also learning how to mange my time properly.
As a muslim we've been thaught to pray 5 times a day at different times. It shows that islam teaches us to manage our time properly.Thats why Rasullulah(saw) in one of HIS hadith asked us to appreciate our free time b4 its getting busy.
As i told u b4, time management in study is so crucial. You are now have a lesser time..so please use it wisely.

Anyway lets continue with our discussion on electromagetism..
We've discussed Lenz's law b4. The next will be Faraday's law.
We should thank this guy for his amazing discovery which then allow us to ride a bicycle at nite with dynamo.

In SPM u must be able to state each Laws that u learn..
so far in F5 we've learned Ohm's Law & Lenz's law. Usually question will ask u to state this law & 1 mark is given.
Some of my stdnt said, "its 1 mark only sir"..so they dont bother to memorize them..
Well my advice is ..who knows, may be that 1 mark is the one that separate u frm getting an 'A'..
So..are u willing to loose it???

Ok..lets go straight to the point..
What is Faraday's law??
Faraday's law states that:
magnitude of the induced current is directly proportional to the rate of cutting of magnetic flux.

This law is much easier to undrtand then Lenz's law. Its quite straight foward..
If u cut more magnetic field, u'll get more induce current. Thats why, if u ride a bicycle with dynamo at nite, the faster u cycle, the brighter the bulb. In dynamo itself theres a process of cutting of mgnetic fields which generate induce current that lights up the bulb.

Once u understand this law, in SPM they always ask u about its application. Where actually do we apply this law??
I'll discuss this on next post :)

I leave u guys a video for u to know more about the owner of this law.
like malay proverb said..
tak kenal maka tak cinta,
..dah cinta, jadi suka..
dah suka, lahir perasaan saling memahami

So the message is..to study physics, u need to fall in love with the subject itself..BUKAN falling in love with your 'bf' or 'gf'.
Once u fall in love with it,..u'll like it more...& understand it better. However u need to do the 1st step..which is knowing it.
..to know it.. u need to studylah :)
Just enjoy yrself while studying physics..

Let 'FAILURE' be your MENTOR

(This post is specially dedicated to my students who failed or dint get good result for their last mid-year exam.)

My dear student,
I want u all to know...in life we tend to do mistakes.Why???..coz we always take for granted our precious time given by Allah. We tend to say , relaxlah..exam lambat lagi. But when the time goes by, it wont come back again. We failed bcause we didnt really aprreciate our TIME.Once failure hit us, we feel disappointed & unsecured. We feel bad & sad.
We are surrounded with inferiority complex which makes things more complicated.
Then we blamed ourselves for being not smart enough. Some think they did try their best but still surrounded by failure. Like it or not, what has been done cant be undone. No point crying for something which can't be done. What is important now is to ask ourselves 'what can we do to get out from this failure? and How to do it? Can we still make it?

In order to answer all those questions, u need to learn the truth about failure. Let understand what failure is from this humble story of a baby girl.

"There's a baby girl name Aishah. While trying to walk, she falls for several time, or may be hundreds of time. She failed more than once, but that doesn't stop her from keep on trying. She doesnt know what is failure. But for her failure is like an honest teacher who guides her to walk. After a few months playing with her 'new teacher', she is now walking steadily.Once she can walk, she starts dreaming to run. Once again she looked at 'Mr failure' as her mentor. She studied every failure that she made. Suddenly she is now running by herself. She thanks failure for guiding her all these while.
Now..she is running and laughing in joy. While running she saw a bird flying above the sky. She looked at the bird, and tell herself that one day.."she belives.. she can fly."

My dear student,
Never feel sad about your failure. As i said earlier, no point crying or regretting too much. Look at failure in a positive way. Learn from a story of that fragile little girl. I know, the time is against some of you. However its important for u to learn from your new 'mentor'. Lets do some soul searching and dig out the hidden jewels behind your failure.

My dear student..please understand that..
Failure is not a thing...
Failure is caused by bad choices.. but that doesnt mean that u r bad...
Failure is not a disaster that you must panic over...
Failure is the teacher that presents the experience of doing it wrong...
Failure is the advice to problem that you faced...
Failure is full of information that you need the most...
Failure is not a sign to quit the game.. but, rather, a sign to go back, read the rules and FIGHT again...
Failure can be felt as 'mr inferior' that u can learn from to produce a more 'superior' performance...

The truth is..Failure is the path for you to become a WINNER.

I wish u All the best ..
may u find the right path which leads you to fly with flying colors in this SPM.

Best regards,
Cikgu Ahmad a.k.a cikgufizik

SPM Tips : "NO PAIN NO GAIN"

Hi everyone..

Today i just wanna share one of my xperience with a student recently. We discussed his problems about physics, especially the section B & C,paper 2. He asked me for tips, i told him any tips wont do u any good if u didn't practice. He complained, i've no time , midterm xm is just within 2 days. I need 'instant tips'. By looking at his answer i wondered what he'd been doing for the past 1.5 years?

I'm not trying to be rude, but..Hey..what do u xpect..do u think studying physics is like cooking 'mee maggi'?
Can u xpect by having thousand tips just b4 the xm will give u an 'A1' or atleast'A2'?
This is a typical malaysian students' attitude..if xm is getting near they r lookin for tips.
In the end they dont treasure the virtues of knowledge that they supposed to appreciate. Let say even though they've scored a good results ..i'm sure they will be having problems studying in university. Coz in university u need to appreciate what KNOWLEDGE is..otherwise u'll end up like other graduates who is hopeless to find job in this competitive market.

Some said what important is to get an A.. YES its true. Some said if u have money, u can buy thousand TIPS through internet...but still it wont guarantee you an A. The truth is u need to appreciate wat u've learned. Its not only applicable to physics but other subjects as well. Sometimes u need to learn the hard way but in a smart approach.
As people said 'NO PAIN NO GAIN'

Inshaallah, for this year SPM candidates, I’m planning to do online conference on selected topic after this school holiday. U need a microfon set for this purpose.. hopefully I can do it as early as possible. I will conduct it in mixed language, malay & english coz my focus is to help those yg lemah english. SO please pray for my good health :) 
For those interested, send me yr email address. I’ will give notice in advance thru blog & email..so please come again for more updates.

Videos on Lenz's 's Law

I've explained a bit on Lenz's law in previous post. Some students having problem to apply tis law..
So please clarify it b4 its too late..go & ask yr teacher or tutor..

In SPM we use this law to find the direction of induced current in the solenoid.
However lenz's law is not only about finding induced current. The following video demonstration might be usefull to describe the whole concept of lenz's law.Enjoy watching..

SPM 'A' tips: Stop Procrastinating

Most of u might realizes that one of the most common problems when studying is procrastination( suka bertangguh). We all know what we want to do and what we should be doing... but in the end we still end up spending hours doing “easier” work like watcin TV, surfing internet, doing facebook & myspace, playing 'stupid' games,or listen too much of music.
Now, nothing wrong with a little escape from time to time. But if you procrastinate too much..
dont blame others if u cant get a good results for your SPM...
U should blame urself for playing games sampai 4 hours, but spent only 1.5 hrs hours doing revision during this cuti skolah.

So.. how can you change this bad habit? Here i will only share 2 tips to help you to stop procrastinating and start appreciatin your priceless time from now on.
so these tips are very usefull for my form4 students..no honeymoon year ok :), othrwise u end up like some of those 'cool' spm candidates...
though it seems a bit late for them, its better to start to do something rather than doin nothing..

Ok..1st rule:
Stop thinking... Start doing.

A bit of planning can certainly help you to achieve what you want to achieve.
'Too much planning and thinking' tends to have the opposite effect. You always think and think and try to come up with “the perfect plan”. A plan where you don’t have to make mistakes, where you will never be rejected, where there will be no pain or difficulties. Such a thing does of course not exist. But as long as you work on what u've planned, you can protect yourself.. at least from getting 'F' :)
U can start with a simpleplan. What i mean of simple plan is go & do your study time table NOW! Then execute it..

2nd rule:
Just take the 1st STEP

Focus on taking the first step today. That is all you need to focus on, nothing else. By taking the first step you change your mental state from resistant to “hey, I’m doing this,.. it seems cool babe”. SO..You've put yourself in state where you are becoming more positive. We need this positive energy..Then you can take the next step..and another step further..untill u can do it consistantly.

As for the beginning..here i attached a few collection of midterm exam papers from Melaka.
So what are u waiting for..go & try them! .. take the very 1st step :)..no more procrastinatingg...just say TAK NAK!

SPM: Induced Current

ok.lets continue our discussion on Electromagnetic induction..
In SPM syllabus, its important 4 u to know how to determine the direction of induced current in the following cases:
i. direction of induced current in a straight wire..
u can use Flemming's right hand rule to identify the induced current's direction.
BUT remember!!!!!! we use RIGHT hand for this..NEVER use your left hand!!! Left hand is used to find the FORCE in electromagnet. We use RIGHT hand to find the CURRENT direction..and its only valid for induction. How to use this rule?? look at the diagram below

One student asked me..Sir..i'm confused ..whats the difference between left & right hand rule???
OK, to answer that question.. please notice the following comparison carefully,

Electromagnet

Electromagnetic Induction

- Use FLEMMING LEFT HAND

- Use FLEMMING RIGHT HAND

- current is needed

- Motion/force is needed

-FORCE is produced

-INDUCE CURRENT is produced

- process of making a temporary magnet

- process to generate induced EMF to generate induce current

- concept used to build D.C motor

- used to build Generator

ii.direction of induced current in solenoid
for this case u really need to understand the whole concept carefully..student always get confuse when using this law...
Ok..to determine the current direction in solenoid..we use LENZ's law. What is LENZ's law???

Lenz's law states that...
the direction of induce current is such that the change producing it will beopposed.
*******please understand this law & try to memorize it*********

Lets now apply what actually this law trying to tell us. Observe the following figure 1 & figure 2.
In figure 1:
- the NORTH pole of the bar magnet is moving into the coil,

According to Lenz's law..

- the induced current produced will flow in such a way to oppose the approaching bar magnet
- thus, the flowing induce current produces North pole on the end of coil as to repel the
approaching magnet.

In figure 2:
the NORTH pole of the bar magnet is pulled out from the coil,

According to Lenz's law..

- the induced current produced will flow in such a way that it won't allow the bar magnet leaving
the coil
- thus, the flowing induce current produces SOUTH pole on the end of coil as to prevent the
magnet from leaving.

Electromagnetic Induction

Today i wanna go back to where we've left our previous discussion on electromagnet . The last sub-topic we've discussed was about d.c motor principle.

The next discussion will be subtopic 3.3 which is one of my favorate.. its about electromagnetic induction. I like this one bcoz its like doing an illusion .Just imagine without a battery or solar power supply can we still light up a bulb?..

Usually to light up the bulb we need continuous supply of current, which we get it from batteries or solar energy. But in this topic, we dont need those batteries..all we need is a magnet.

YEah..magnet alone can produce current..but HOW??
This process is what we call magnetic induction..
By bringing the magnet closer or moving it into the coils of wire, u can produce current which is known as Induced Current...Meanwhile, the emf produced is known as induced emf.
U can actually ligt up your torchlight without any batteries....watch this

So in SPM, u must be able to
i. describe electromagentic induction... HOW??

When we move a magnet into a coil of wire, there is change in magnetic field. In other wrords, the magnetic fields are being cut which cause an induced e.m.f (electromotive force) to be produced.
An induced current flows through the wire and this phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction

To understand this better..u can watch these videos..

look!.. what happen to the ammeter reading when a magnet is brought close to the coil..

u can also download this note to get a clearer picture on electromagnetic induction.
The same concept is applied in bicycle's dynamo . The bulb lights up when u start to cycle..no batteries are needed..all u need is to continue cycling.
This is the mysterious world of magnet..it generates current when the magnetic fields being cut.
I'll discuss more about this on next post.

SPM A1 Student tips

Hi guys..

Yeah!!Its holiday season again..a Holiday mood!!
However is it Time to enjoy & relax? yeah y not..
but don't forget to revise k..coz othrwise SPM will haunt u after the school break..hopefully u'll b having a 'productive holidays'

For today's post, its worth reading this article written by one of your seniors who got an A for physics. They summarize some good tips on studying SPM physics.. enjoy reading :)

How to Study Physics for SPM?

Although I scored an A1 in Physics for SPM, I am not exactly the right person to be asked, "how did you do it?" So, I posed the question to my friend, Jasmine, instead to see what she had to say. Jasmine and I have known each other for 5 years (yes, throughout my secondary school years) but, our fathers know each other longer than that! Anyway, here is what she had to say:

Firstly, Physics is very different compared to the other subjects. Physics is one of the toughest Science subjects for many people. Physics is more to the Maths side as it is mostly calculations, formulaes and principles.. Biology is 100% memorising, Chemistry is 50% calculation, 50% memorising, Physics on the other hand is 100% calculation and formulaes. The study of Physics is very deep and it involves a lot of techincal details: heat, electricity, electronics and so forth. Every minor detail is important and that makes the subject complex and sometimes even tedious. Nevertheless, once mastered, Physics is very useful for survival purposes in our daily life.

One very important thing in Physics is understannding. You must understand what you are learning, not just memorise for the sake of exam. Physics is actually an easy subject to study. All you must know are the formulaes and principles involved.. What usually happens is the teacher will twist the questions and asked them from different angles. That is when it becomes tough. What you must remember is the basic pronciples involved. No matter how tough the question is, in the end, it will always go back to the basic principles.

I would recommend a good revision book for this subject as the school textbook alone is not enough to score. Pay attention in class and ask questions whwnever you don't understand. Do not be scared or shy to question your teachers as it is necessary for you to know in detail about Physics. For eg:
Where did the formulaes come from, how are they derived, how are the variables involved connected to each other, conversion of units and many more.

Master your calculations and make sure you choose the right formulaes for each question. This can be a problem sometimes. Physics is not a mugging subject, you cannot simply study it by the book. You must attempt questions from workbooks and do a lot of exercises. Only then you will be exposed to a wide range of different ways questions can be asked. Hence, you will be able to answer various types oy questions no matter how tough they may seem.

Interest plays a vital role in scoring in this subject. You must show keen interest in studying Physics. Most people dislike the subject as it is far more complicating then the other Science subjects. Therefore, they make no effort to master the subject.

Finally, try attempting the past year questions for Physics. Analyse the questions and topics that have come out in the previous years. SPM questions are always very similar, so chances of the same type of questions coming out every year is very high. Please take note, same type of questions, not same questions. Make sure that you are able to do all the past year questions. If so, you will not have a problem during the actual exam.

It is very important for you to understand in Physics. You MUST know what you are studying. Only then will you be able to score in the subject. Physics is not a difficult subject. I feel that it is much easier than Biology and Chemistry, bur it requires a lot of patience, interest and understanding.

NEXT, I asked her what type of reference books she would recommend. Also asked why she was very interested in the subject.

I don't know what are the reference books they have nowadays for Physics but I would recommend either Success or Focus. I found both quite good. But you can also check out the others that are there now.

I was always interested in tools and mechanical stuff ever since I was small. I love playing with my father's gadgets even now and I suppose that's why I love Physics. This is something that has to come from within I guess.

So, there you have it. Feel free to add on to the above mentioned points. One question for all of you out there, how do you spark an interest in Physics?
