SPM Physics 2020: How to deal with Exam stress

SPM2020 candidate will be having exam in just few weeks. While COVID 19 cases are getting worst...student need to look after their health..remain calm and stay focus.

Stress is common symptom when exam is approaching. U'll find that time is ticking faster than usual. U might think that u haven't done enough. But this is not the time to criticise yourself..instead stay calm and focus on what u can do. If u still haven't completed paper1 past year paper..this is time to do so. At least u ll know what are the basic concept that u still haven't mastered. Then discuss it with your teacher, friends, and tutor.

It is important to learn how to release your stress. Here are some of the examples that u can do to overcome  anxiety during this stressful month:

1. Pray hard and make dua..

2. Spend quality time with the loved one

3. Exercise - this might help u to combat stress especially if  u love sports.

4. Playing with your cats or pet... i found this very helpfull whenever i hug my cat, my negative mood has changed:)

There are many other ways to release the pressure that you feel. It is important for u to know how to handle the pressure, especially in this critical moment. I wish u all the best :)

SPM physics: Midterm result

I 'm sure most of u have received your mid term results especially on your physics subject. If u are form 5 student, i think its time to reflect on mistakes u did during the exam. Analyze each paper especially mistakes on paper 2 & paper 3. Identify why u did such a mistake..was it due to careless mistake or because u have no idea at all about the topics being asked. If the latter was the case, then that particular topic might be one of your weakest point. So it is time to polish your understanding on those critical topics. Don't be shy to ask your teacher or friends and tutor. If u keep it unsolved, i m afraid in next couple of  months the problem might grow like a cancer disease. If u drag it until October, it may be too late to be cured. So please act now and do learn from those mistakes. The best thing is not to repeat them again especially in your SPM .

Oh yeah, talking about this midterm results, i received this sms few days ago from one of my form 4 home tuition student. She is now accepted to join Kolej Yayasan Saad. If u read this Anis, it was a great privilege to have a chance to guide & teach u since January..wish u all the best...

Genuine mistake or Careless Mistake??

Some students complained to me that they always get lower mark in their physics test or exams. They said that they did plenty of mistakes. Well, the fact is it is almost impossible to get 100% mark in your physics paper even if u get soalan bocor :) Mistakes obviously show us what needs to be improved. Without them how would we know what we had to work on.

...Genuine mistakes
Usually students will loose marks on genuine mistakes, i.e mistake that is inevitable due to your poor knowledge on certain physics concept. This can only be improved if u have a good understanding on applying physics formula, laws and principles. Consult one to one session with your teacher, tutor or friends  if u still have this kind of problems.Act now before its too late. The difference between excellent and mediocre students are judged by how they react on their mistakes.

Besides that, u  must appreciate that 1 mark in  exam sometimes can make huge different on your physics's grade. Some students get an A just by 1 mark while some of u were just passed by 1 mark. Each mark is valuable in exam and they all have the same value. You should not have 'tak apa' kind of attitude towards certain question. What i mean is..certain student dont memorise definition bcause it contributes only one mark. U'll never know that 1 mark should perhaps help u to get higher grade.

..Careless mistake..
Don't forget that easy marks are just as important as the difficult one. In SPM u can't afford to lose easy marks especially due to careless mistakes. If u do more than 10 careless mistakes, u have the tendency to get a lower grade i.e from "A- to B+ or in worst case from C+ to D"
In past exams or tests, u must acknowledged number of careless mistakes that u have done. If u did plenty of them, u should say "Its enough!". Once u rectify reasons behind the mistakes, never repeat it again.Trust me, your best teacher is actually is your LAST MISTAKE.

ZERO Careless Mistakes campaign...
This year i'm campaigning for ZERO careless mistakes among my students.  To help u rectify your own  mistakes in physics's paper, here are some of examples on where common careless mistakes actually came from..
  • misunderstood or misinterpret questions
  • no units included in calculation (paper 2)
  • U keyed in the wrong figures or operation in your calculator
  • student overlooked these magic words.. "except".."not true" .."false"(common in paper 1)
  •  did not convert unit into SI unit ( common in paper 1)
  • Failed to observe difference or similarities between diagrams (paper 2 section B)
There are many other type of careless mistakes  which i haven't mentioned.Perhaps u can also share your xperience on your own careless mistakes with others. I hope from this article, u should look at your mistakes in a positive way. Like it or not..without mistakes, we might learn nothing. Success seems to be connected with action. Successfull students keep moving. They make mistake, but they dont give up to learn from it.
I leave u guys with this famous quote from Winston Churchill:
"All men make mistakes..only wise men learned from their mistake."

with best regards,

More homework?? No time lah..

Today i wanna write something which i think has to be shared with all  the SPM 2011 candidates..
I 'm the type of who loves to give extra exercises to my students in a form of homework. However every year i face the same problem i.e most student seems not to bother doing extra physics exercises especially from tutors. Common excuse i received will be something like this: " No time lah sir, school homework also havent finished. Other subject also have homework" I told them,  previous students took more than 10 subjects, but they still managed to get  A in all subject. They wont get such results if they didnt do exercises in an early stage.  They also have 24 hours a day, just like all of us. The huge different is they knew how to manage their time effectively.

Most student seems do not know what they want in SPM. They have no direction or clear objectives. In the end, they blame teachers as an excuse for getting bad results.I may sound a bit harsh, but for me those who love to give excuses are 1 step closer to become a looser. I do not want u to become one.
.

However, if u are among these types of students, then u should start to manage your time properly. Have a clear objectives. One of the objective is to get good results for physics & other subjects.
In order to get excellent results u need to do tonnes of exercises. U shouldn wait until last minute..then baru nak buat exercises. If u keep going like this, then u shouldn't have complained if u still don't understand the physics subject. In fact, the homework itself should be treated as part of your revision program. Don t do the homework just to satisfy your teachers. Instead you should try to understand and concentrate on all concepts involved in that discussed topics.

This week most of  u are blessed with 1 week holiday. So dont waste this opportunity to do revision. Do concentrate on your weakest physics' topics. Don't waste too much of your precious time on TV, PS2 or facebook :) Have a nice holiday and a happy chinese new year to our chinese friends.

Lets Learn physics like "A" students

Hi everyone..lately there are quite number of students asked me these questions;
-How to learn physics??
-How to improve my physics??
-How can i get A for physics??
So i think its time for me to share something about the art of learning physics..
Basically all those questions have the same purpose, i.e to learn, understand & perform in exam.

In studying physics, it is essential to develop an ability to analyse problems, to give logic reason, and to differentiate between important and irrelevant material. You should start to train your analytical thinking skills by practicing simple problems, so that later on you can tackle more difficult problems. However, please take note.. trying to memorise physics is practically useless!!

In order to understand physics stuff properly, it needs patient and gonna take some time. For me, learning physics is easier if you have a group of ‘physics friends’ in a study group. Trust me,cooperative learning can be really powerful & it would save most of your time. BUT..please find someone who really want to discuss physics..not someone who love gossiping each other...

"Identifying the DONTS"
A common misunderstanding in studying physics , most students focused too much on calculation questions.
Physics in SPM is not just solving maths problems, although this is an essential part of ‘doing physics’.

A common approach to ‘solving’ problems is to read the question, look for an equation that seems to apply, ‘plug’ some values into the equation and do the maths to ‘swallow out an answer’. You may get the ‘right’ answer without the brain being fully engaged, and therefore u learned very little from the process.

Physics is not simply abaout plugging the values & substituted it to get the right answers.U must actually understand the relationship between each physical quantity in the equation. Usually each equation or formula  came from an experiment conclusion.. but ask yourself,do u know how to design those experiments???

Dont simply Memorise!!!

You may try to memorise all the patterns of sample problems, hoping that similar problems will be asked on the exams. Memorisation does not equal to understanding.  In SPM they loved to twist the questions..So if u simply applies memorising technique, then u'll be in big trouble during exam.

Dont simply follow examples!!

You must be able to follow a set of instructions correctly and intelligently. However, if you find you can only solve problems by following the pattern of a worked-example problem, you obviously have not yet grabbed the basics. You should think again about the basic concepts & principles – or ask for some help. The problems on an exam will be different from the examples worked in class and in the textbook, yet the same strategies and principles will work.

Learn like 'A' students...

To get an "A"..mainly it’s a matter of focusing on the right things. You may think that the only important thing is getting the ‘right’ answer. Teachers, of course, like ‘right’ answers, but beyond that, 'A' students focus on the process of using basic principles of physics to correctly analyse each physical situation.
When you achieve genuine understanding of basic principles and laws, the answers often come easily. Getting right answers with ease is a good indication that you understand the basics. Genuine understanding needs to come first, then continuous practise on solving problems will strengthen  that understanding.

So how can you achieve genuine understanding?

  • Do critical thinking..Question everything, especially things that seem obvious.
  • Always ask yourself, where does the equation comes from?. Is it from an Experiment or Theory?
  • Look for the logical and mathematical connections between equations, laws, theories and experiments. Using a ‘Concept Map’ might help..
  • Don’t be too easily satisfied with a correct answer. Ask yourself what that answer tells you.
  • Discuss what u've understood with teachers, tutors and fellow students.
  • Do exercises.. keep practise, practise & practise :)

Form 4 Post mortem

Dear all..
Welcome to the month of February , the month with shortest no.of days but lots of public holidays :) [ Hari Wilayah (1st Feb) ,chinese new yr(14-15 Feb) & maulidur rasul (26 Feb)]. This is the month where teachers gonna be strugling to cope with their lesson plan as scheduled. By the way, i'm not gonna discuss about the lesson plan.
I will start my discussion with a simple question to all SPM candidates:
How many hours did u spend to revise form 4 chapters in a week ???

If your aswer is NO & have done nothing on form 4 so far, i think u need to reorganise your study plan. The purpose i'm telling u this due to my students poor performance in their recent 'intervensi test' [.. valid for KL student only]
After having their results, most of them realised that they've forgotten most of the important physics facts in form4. I've been telling them so many times, if u dont have proper form4 revision plan.. u'll forget lots of things.

Ok some of them argued that their brilliant classmates dont need to revise them every week. Well i asked them back, ..Do u think they were telling u the truth??? Do u really know what these 'A' students are doin at home?? Anyway..ask your self again..Do your brain processor work as fast as their 'pentium dual core processor'??? If the answer is NO, then u better slap your face NOW, before its too late!

For this reason i'm asking for those who hardly pass their physics to at least consistently revise form4 topics in a week. For me, if u spend only an hour for form4 topics in a week wont be enough.WHy??..coz u have 3 physics papers to answer in SPM. Each paper will test u any form4 chapters.

For example in paper 3 section B, u will be given an option to design only one form4 experiment.
Let say U might have learned more than 15 experiments in form4. Out of all these experiments only 1 will come out in the exam...so the probability is roughly about 1 out of 15. None of us know which one will come out..Each experiment requires u to memorise the diagram, list of apparatus, procedure..and so on. ..I'm only talking about physics paper3, tak campur other papers as well...
On top of that..u have at least another 8 subjects plus form 5 topics to deal with. Btw,I think its time for u to do a post mortem on all form 4 chapters!!!

Otherwise, if u dont prepare from now...
Do u think u can understand & memorise all of those form4 topics just 3 months before 'trial' or 'SPM'???
