    LESS is MORE

    Today i'm gonna share with u  tips on avoiding mistakes while doing calculation type of question.
    Common habit among student once they attempt calculative questions, they simply grab a calculator & start to press the button like playing PSP. They don't bother to highlight or jot down anything. This habit can cause u to do careless mistakes, especially if u forgot to change its figure into SI unit.
    So for this purpose, i'm sharing u a technique that can minimise your mistakes.
    This technique is called LESS..i.e u need to carry out these 4 steps;

    1. List down and highlight all the information or figures given( check its unit as well)
    2. Equation = choose the right equation/formulae
    3. Substitute the figure into the relevant equation
    4. Solve the equation..then baru press your calculator :)

    For example:
    A car traveling with a velocity of 10 m s-1 accelerates uniformly at a rate of 3 m s-2 for 20 s.   Calculate the displacement of the car.

    1.list down the information: u=10 , a=3, t =20
    2. Choose the equation..   (v2 = u2 + 2as)  or (s = ut + ½ at2)...
    you are not provided with v, thus most suitable is (s = ut + ½ at2)

    Then substitute and solve the equation
    s= 10(20) + (1/2 x 3 x 20x20)
     = 800m

    If u apply LESS technique step by step.., i'm sure u'll grab MORE marks :)
    just enjoy your revision during this festive season :)

    Physics Application: Electric Bell

    Today's tips:

    One important aspect in studying physics is the ability to apply & relate each physics concept. In SPM application part is vital as it always being asked in paper 2. You are expected to explain certain physics application such as the working principle of an electric bell. Usually there are 4 marks allocated for this type of question. However to explain it, u must fully understand the physics concept being applied. In the case of electric bell, we apply the concept of electromagnet.

    Generally to understand basic concept of electromagnet, we must appreciate that every time current flows in a wire, magnetic field is produced. If the wire is coiled around soft iron, this causes the soft iron to be magnetized and become a temporary magnet. Once it becomes a magnet, it has the tendency to attract any magnetic materials such as iron armature in the bell.

    Once u understand the basic concept, then u must practise to explain the working principle of an electric bell. Why dont u take a reference book,watch this video.. try to undertand and explain how it works ..

    There are many other application of electromagnet such as relay switch,telephone ear piece, circuit breaker etc. Just make sure u are able to explain all of them.

    Form 4 Physics Law

    Today's revision tips...
    to improve your physics understanding, its a must for u to master all the physics law that u learn in SPM. U must also be able to relate & apply its formula. It will be helpful for u to answer both paper 2 & 3. For this purpose i summarised some physics law for form 4 topics only.  Ops..before some of u might ask.."How about list of form 5 physics law"??? Well there are only three physics law under form 5 topics..
    ..why dont u take out your refrence book & do some digging ..
    anyway enjoy your revision :)..

    SPM Physics Definition

    Today i'm going to discuss on SPM physics definition that can come out in paper 2 section A, B or C. Although there are a lots of definition need to be memorised, in average only 3 to 4 definition will be asked in the exam. Each definition contributes one mark only. If u are aiming for A+, u cant afford to loose too many marks. So its up to u, whether u want to grab all the marks on definition or  to 'sedekah' some of them :)

    Some definition can defined straight forward by referring to its formula. For example, pressure can be defined as Force acting per unit area ( P=F/A) or resistance can be defined as ratio of potential differnt over current (R=V/I).

    However please be careful because not all definition can be defined based on its formula. For example u can't define potential different by using V=IR. If u say that potential different equals to product of current and resistance, u 'll lose the mark. In fact to define it, u should refer to its fundamental equation, i.e V=E/Q. Thus potential different is defined as 'energy needed to move a unit charge from one point to another'.

    Some of the definition does not belong to any equation. For example elasticity is defined as 'the property of an object that enables it to return to its original shape after an applied external force is removed'
    This kind of definition will be easier to memorise  if u fully understand the keyword used to describe it. Basically once u can understand the physics concept being discussed, its much easier for u to memorize the definition.

    You have only few months before SPM. Well, there's still time for u to revise all of the definition in SPM. Hopefully this post will give u some rough idea to deal with it.
    All the best :)

    Semangat Ramadhan

    Lama rasanya tak update blog ni, hmm sempena bulan mulia ni terpanggil untuk kembali menyumbang buah fikiran bagi membantu mereka yang memerlukan. Rasanya belum terlambat utk mengucap salam ramadhan al mubarak utk semua. Begitu pantas masa berlalu, tau-tau ramai yang kecut perut tatkala radiasi 'SPm' mula terasa bahangnya. Teringat pesan Nabi yang bijaksana, "hargailah masa lapangmu sebelum masa sibuk". Tapi apa nak buat, memang lumrah ramai yang leka bila waktu lapang..hanya mereka yang faham hakikat masa sahaja dianggap orang yang beruntung.

    Yakinlah bahawa bulan ini penuh dgn barakah. Kita tidak perlu makan pagi,tengahari atau petang. Jika pandai mengurus masa..kita ada kelebihan disitu. Kita punyai masa yang agak berlebihan untuk belajar. Sesudah atau sebelum sahur juga boleh dimanfaatkan untuk ulangkaji....Oh tapi, masalahnya badan semakin letih. Otak semakin sendat dgn maklumat yang separuh masak. Masihkah ada sinar dan harapan untuk mengubah sesuatu yang hampir mustahil???

    Oh sudah tentu ada..tetapi hanya yang berfikiran positif sahaja layak untuk melakukannya.

    Harus faham bahawa ramadan ini bukanlah masa untuk merasa longlai tatkala menelaah prinsip Archimedes. Bulan in juga bukanlah masa utk merasa lesu tatkala pening memahami hukum Lenz. Mengapa harus rasa letih..kita bukan disuruh berperang secara fizikal. Walhal para sahabat ulung di zaman nabi telah membuktikan kerana ruh ramadan mereka berjaya dengan cemerlang di medan Badar yang pada mulanya hampir mustahil untuk menang. Mereka juga mungkin rasa lapar dan dahaga. Namun,kenapakah mereka berjaya?? Sesungguhnya mereka adalah manusia hebat, berdisiplin, bersemangat dan yang terpenting mendapat rahmat serta pertolongan ajaib dari yang Esa.

    Oleh itu usah rasa ragu pada kejaiban ramadan. Kuatkan semangat dan tenaga untuk memecah tembok kebuntuan yang sudah terlalu lama mencengkam. Banyaklah memohon dan bersujud dgn rasa rendah diri padaNYA. Pohon juga kemaafan pada guru yang mungkin sering dicondemn' tatkala diri sendiri tidak bersunguh2 untuk faham. Harapnya redha Tuhan dan redha guru akan memberi cahaya baru.Maka akan cair aura mazmumah dan akan terang hati yang bakal menyuluh akal. Mudah-mudahan semangat ramadan mampu memberi sinar walaupun ketika di penghujung jalan.

    Mid Term results

    Hi guys,how was your holidays? Dah banyak revise?  sorry for not keeping u update during last holidays.. i was bz with tuition class.. and seminars.

    Btw, the new term has just started. .i'm sure some of u have got their last mid term physics results.
    How was it? Are u satisfied..or frustrated with it??? If  the results was very encouraging, then start to aim high for your SPM.However if it was the  frustrating one,..what will u do next?? Whats your plan?How are u going to recover from it?
    For me,what ever  results that  u've got..first of all u must do post-morterm. Analyse your mistakes. If it was a genuine one, identify which topics that cause u lose most of the marks.Then 'attack' those weakest one.
    If  u did plenty of careless mistakes.. ask yourself why u did it? You should not  repeat them again especially in SPM...its too costly.Another thing u must  learn from all those mistakes and never repeat it again.Keep trying and never give up.

    Its like a football match, the first half is over..then comes the second half for u to turn around the results. Your second half performance is the most crucial. If u think that u did  badly in the first half.. do find a good coach to let u score at least A goal :)
    Just remember.. if u always think positive.. u ll get positive results.

    Let's De-Stress

    Its finally over..u've done your midterm xm. Its time to release your tense a lil bit... For form4 student, u can definitely enjoy your school break...hmm how abt form 5 student?? ..
    Yeah why not..go & take a break too, but not tooo longgg :)

    Its not a honeymoon period for u my dear F5 students... If u've done it quite well, go somewhere & reward yourself. However, if u 've done it badly, go somewhere that can relax your mind too..at least for 2-3 days.
    Then start to do post mortem on your recent performance. Analyse your strentgh & weakness. Revise back chapters that u hardly answered in last xm. Try to improve on next trial xm. We're now approaching June, i.e u dont have that much time untill yr trial which some of u could be taking it in August. Dont wait till last minute..
    Anyway enjoy your school break..and what ever it is.. u guys obviously need to de-stress :)

    Electromagnetic Waves

    Some of my students are having difficulties to memorise spectrum of electromagetic waves. One of easier way to memorize them are by using acronym.I belived that some of u must had been taught an acronym to memorise spectrum of rainbow.When i was form 1,my science teacher thought me this acronym, which i can still remember until now..
    It sounds like this..
    Michael Jackson Kena Hantar Balik India Utara
    (Merah,Jingga,Kuning,Hijau,Biru,Indigo,Ungu) ..last time we learned them in bahasa melayu :)

    Now u can appply the same method for memorizing electromagnet spectrum.
    My version of electromagnet spectrum acronym sounds like this..
    Radhi  Minat  Indra's  Very  Ugly  X  Girlfriend

    Radhi      =  R-adio
    Minat     =  M-icrowave
    Indra's    =  In-fra red
    Very       =  V-isible light
    Ugly        =  U-ltra violet
    X            =  X-ray
    Girlfriend =  G-amma Ray

    In fact u can change them with the name of your classmate..or create your own version.
    These days, learning is getting much easier coz some creative students in other part of the world has manged to create interesting song about electromagnet spectrum.
    Watch this video..perhaps u can use this stuff to help u memorize them..
    Wish u all the best in your coming physics exam..

    Mid Year Encounter

    Starting next week, most students in Malaysia will be having their mid year exam. This exam is an important bench mark for 2011 SPM candidates. It will indicate how good u are in handling problems in both form 5 & form 4 chapters. For physics subject, it will be a challenging task as the form 5 topics is getting pushy. At the same time u need to flash back on the form 4 killer topics such as Light,  and may be Forces & Motion. This is a good test on how u manage pressure while doing revision for all chapters. Your mid year results will give a psychological effect on your SPM preparation.

    Having exam is like engaging in a war.  U are the general and yet u are the soldier. To win, u need to handle both superior & inferior pressure. If u know the enemy and know yourself, u 'll be a fearless warrior. Only a warrior will survive a battle.A warrior fights like unfaltering fighter without fearing to give up. A win will boost his moral to conquer the next battle. A defeat will only make him stronger to regroup and fight like a champion in the final battle. I wish u are among the fearless warrior.
    Good luck !

    Hooke's Law & Elasticity

    Last weekend i gave physics tuition for form 5 student at a program organised by Masjid Negara. We managed to complete revision on chapter Forces & Motion which is one of the most feared chapter among student. The last topic we discussed was about Elasticity.
    Masjid Negara tuition program ...unlike the boys the girls looked serious ha :)
    After the class, i can conclude that most student having difficulties to define physics concept because they don't fully understand each word or term used to describe it. For instance, in physics we do learn the concept of elasticity. Elasticity comes from the word elastic. Actually one doesnt need to learn physics to understand the term elastic, all he needs is a dictionary plus his experiences after a bungee jump :).
    Ok..If u take out an Oxford english dictionary, elastic means
    able to resume its normal shape spontaneously after being stretched or compressed.

     In physics , the term ELASTICITY is almost similar to the one defined in dictionary, i.e...
    A property of object that enable it to return into its original length & shape after an applied external force is removed
    However, we science stream student should be able to understand the term elasticity beyond what have been understood by the lament. Again, lets look in depth the term elasticity in physics point of view.

    In SPM, the concept of elasticity leads us to appreciate another  famous physics law called a Hooke's Law.
    This is the law that relates the force applied and the extension or compression of the elastic object such as spring and rubber band.

    Hooke's law states that;
    The extension of elastic material such as spring is directly proportional to the force applied provided the elastic limit is not exceeded.

    In simple word it means, the larger the force applied, the longer the extension of the spring as long as it doesnt exceed the elastic limit. Please take note that extension means increase in length.. not the total length of the spring when the force is applied.

    If we look at mathematics point of view, we have a relation between F( force) and x (extension), thus we arrived to a variation formula of
    F= kx
    where k is the 'spring constant or force constant'
    The problem with our syllabus, the maths we learn in form 4 does not tally with the one that we learned in physics. The concept of variation or proportionality will only be learned in form 5 maths. That is part of the reason why some form 4 students are having difficulties to understand the term 'k' i.e force constant.
    However if u r form 4, at the moment just appreciate that same spring with same material has fixed value of 'k'

    If we pull a spring with a force F, the spring length is displaced, i.e it is extended.This product of Force(F) & displacement (x) tells us that work is being done. (Recall Work=Force x displacement) Thus we can say taht there is energy stored in the spring. This energy is known as elastic potential energy. It can be determined using the following formula,

    Elastic Potential Energy = 1/2 (F)(x)

    Usually every physics's law has graphical explanation. Seems it is a directly proportional relation between F & x, so we'll have a straight line passes through origin.

    From the graph, u must acknowledge that..
              Gradient = force constant (k)
    where, the steeper the gradient, the bigger the spring constant,i.e  the stiffer the spring

    Meanwhile, from the graph  its area represents potential energy,
    Area under the graph = Elastic potential energy

    to understand further on this law, please watch this video.

    Newton's 2nd Law

    Sometimes to understand physics subject, we need to use some common sense. Let me give u one example, assuming that a coconut and a tennis ball  is falling from the same height onto your head..which one will hurt u the most?? I can bet that a 13 year school boy who didn't learn physics can tell us  that the coconut will exert greater force. All he needs is to use some common sense.

    Now lets look at  physics point of view. We learned that gravity will pull both coconut & the ball at the same acceleration if the air resistance is negligible. Then curiosity is telling us there must be other factor that causes a painful force produced by the coconut. Finally we can conclude that the different mass explained different forces produce by the ball & coconut. This situation describes how the concept of Newton's 2nd law can be applied.

    According to this law,the force of a moving object is equal to product of its mass & acceleration. These two factors i.e the mass & acceleration will determine how big the force is produced. In other word, Newton 2nd law is concerned in relating acceleration, mass & the net force.
    Fnet= ma
    If u notice, i use the term net force instead of force only. This is because, in SPM most of the question we deal with a case that involves more than one force. The net force means that we need to add or minus all the forces involved. For example,

    A car with a mass of 100 kg moves with a driving force of 500N. Each tyre of the car causes a frictional force of 5N. Determine the car's aceleration??

    Before u solve this problem, u need to identify all the information given. There are two type of forces involved i.e driving force & frictional force. Both forces are in different direction...seems each tyre causes friction, thus 4 tyres causes (4 x 5N) = 20 N. This 20 N  frictional force will oppose motion of the car.
    Thus the NET FORCE will be (500 - 20)N. The final calculation should look like this;

          Fnet = m x a
    500 - 20 = 100 x a
               a = 4.8 ms-2

    To understand better about Newton's 2nd law of motion, u should watch the following videos.

    Newton's 1st Law

    Isaac Newton a 17th century scientist who is a very prominent figure in the world of physics. His theory & laws had been widely used till now and  it even helped  us to enjoy the rapid development of Formula 1 racing technology.
    We are now living in a post IT society which is full of entertainment. We are able to do almost everything through online i.e playing games, facebook, shopping, watching movies etc. Those days in 17 th century, they don't have many entertainment as what we're having now. I would say the best entertainment for them are to seek more knowledge as possible. They don't have youtube, facebook, PS3, or among the worst Datuk T's pornographic movie. In other words they were not distracted with all these time wasting stuff.

    Sometimes i 've been thinking that being a knowledgeable person at those days could be like a Hollywood artist. People will respect & adore them. In fact, this was the century where gifted persons like Isaac Newton, Galilieo Galilei, Blaise Pascal managed to revolutionalize their society towards seeking knowledge.That's why once they 've founded a principle or laws, they would place their names for us to appreciate until the end of time.

    As for today, i want to discuss one of his laws that we will learn in SPM. It is the Newtons 1st Law of motion. Usually when we refer to this law,SPM students are more familiar with the term inertia. So what do this law tells us?

    Newton's 1st law of motion often stated as:
    An object at rest has tendency to stay at rest and object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction UNLESS there is unbalance force acting on it.

    Allow me to make it easier for u to understand. Its like this, all objects tend to '"keep on doing what they're doing" unless there is 'unwanted Force' yang kacau. For example, imagine it's a school holiday and your mom try to wake you up solat subuh. In this case, u have a 'big tendency' to remain on your bed, unless your mom pour a bucket of water on your face :) ..So the bucket of water will be the 'unwanted force'

    Let me give u another classic analogy. If u are a noble, honest & never watch pornography in your life, then u should maintain your 'inertia' i.e your dignity eventhough there is unwanted forces like 'Mr T' who tempted u to watch sex ,lies & video tape (:

    To understand better on concept of inertia or Newton's 1st law of motion,u should watch all these videos.

    Fish & Buoyancy

    Today let's revise some form 4 topics on  Buoyant Force. In SPM, we learned that buoyant force depends on its volume of water displaced. The larger the volume displaced, the greater the buoyant force. Buoyant force also depends on density of the water, i.e greater water density produce greater buoyant force.
    As i told u last time, learning physics will be interesting if u are able to blend its concept with nature & things around u. When i was a kid, i loved to keep fish as a pet and guppy was one of my favorites. Fish is very mobile in water. They are able to swim to the surface, stay in the middle of the water or sink to the bottom.

    Ok how they did it.. I mean to float and sink?? Basically fish is able to do it through air filled bag called swim bladder. This bladder has nothing to do with its urine product. In fact swim bladder helps most fish to maintain its  buoyancy. To swim upward a fish fills the bladder with oxygen through the gills. When the bladder is filled with oxygen, the fish has a greater volume and its bladder is expanded. This displace more water and so it experiences a greater buoyant force.

    In order to sink,air is removed from the bladder that causes decrease in its volume. Thus its average weight will be greater greater than buoyant force which then pull it towards ocean floor.

    To float at certain level, the bladder is filled with air until it displaces a volume of water to produce a buoyant force that equal to its weight. In this case, the weight & buoyant force are in equilibrium. Thus it stays at that level. The same concept is applied in submarine except submarine needs a ballast tank to increase or decrease its buoyancy by adding or removing sea water inside it.
