Transverse Wave

Some students found WAVE topic is quite hard..well, it might b susah, but trust me its an interesting topic. Firtstly u need to understand what is wave..Wave can be produced either through oscillation or vibration. Like Tsunami, the massive wave produced by vibration of the surface of the earth(earthquake). They claimed the amplitude of the wave might had reached 20 feet..about 5 times of my height :)

Besides that, U must also appreciate that waves is a transfer of energy without transfer of matter.

Wave has two type :

  1. Transverse wave
  2. Longitudinal wave

So what is transverse waves?

A transverse wave is a wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction perpendicular to the direction which the wave moves.

Hmmm..still
tak faham?
Ok.. to understand it better, just imagine buah kelapa yang hanyut dibawa ombak. This buah kelapa can represents motion of the particles. Buah kelapa turun & naik .i.e this motion is similar as moving perpendicular to the direction of the wave. (Pependicular = at right angles)

If u stil dont get it, look at this animation.

U can see the motion of the particles moving up & down..pependicularly

Video: Transverse wave

Light, Electromagnetic, & Water waves are examples of transverse wave
